Farmer's Market Committee preparing for 2009 Season The Blairsville Downtown Group is actively prepari;ng for the 2009 Farmers' Market, which will be held on North Walnut Street every Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m., beginning June 9th and ending October 6th. We are excited about this opportunity to provide access to fresh, locally grown food and have established a Farmers' Market committee to support local farmers and local crafters, and foster a social atmosphere at the Market. We are seeking volunteers to assist with market promotion, site preparation, community ortanizations, musicians and chefs on Market Days. Community Booth The market offers a free venue where community organizations can promote their programs and hold fundraising activities. Musicians The market is a great stage for musicians who want to hone their skills and/or increase their exposure. Musicians typically volunteer, but often receive donations from farmers and customers. Chef at the Market This year we are incorporating a "Chef at the Market" program and will have area chefs conduct on-hour cooking demonstrations using foods and other products donated by market vendors. The market advertises featured restaurants and permits restaurants to post and/or distrubute advertising material on the day they are at the market. Market Promotion This will be the third year of the Blairsville Farmer's Market and we want to continue to grow the market. Strong community support and a good customer base will support participating farmers and encourage additional farmers to join our market. Community volunteers spread the word, post signs and distrubute flyers and other materials to promote the market and highlight health and economic benefits of buying fresh, local food. Site Preparation Creating a market enviornment that fosters social interaction involves establishing a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. Community volunteers set-up canopies for use by musicians and chefs and tables and chairs for customer seating. They do this before each market and assist with removal of these items after each market.
